PubMed Central (PMC) is the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature. The PMC journal list comprises journals that deposit material in PMC on a routine basis and generally make all their published articles available.

BioMed Central - the Open Access Publisher. Publisher of 194 peer-reviewed open access journals.
Subject Areas : The research articles in all journals published by BioMed Central are 'Open Access'. They are immediately and permanently available online without charge. A number of journals require an institutional or a personal subscription to view other content, such as reviews or paper reports. Free trial subscriptions to these journals are available.

Finding items in libraries

One of the easiest ways to find which libraries have the items you desire is through WorldCat. You can think of WorldCat as a massive library catalog. It looks up books, articles, media and more. By reading the first page of the website, you can learnmany of the ways WorldCat can help you with your research project.

You can search for titles, authors and subjects for things you're looking for just like any library catalog. Once you find and click on the item that you want, WorldCat will show you the libraries closest to you that carry the item once you put in your local zip code. You can even click through to that library's catalog, in most cases, for further information.

Gain Access: Libraries galore!

Generally, when doing research one thing everyone needs is access to the stuff they want. There is a lot of different stuff and a lot of different ways to access that stuff. Here are some pointers to ways you can gain access to what you need.

First, get access to your local libraries. Libraries have a lot of stuff and with a single access point, your library card with your barcode and PIN, you can access the library's stuff remotely and get stuff when you visit. The Portland metro area, Washington, and Oregon are very user-friendly library communities. Don't limit yourself to thinking you can only use one library system because you live in only one place. Most of our libraries are linked together by consortia agreements. That's a fancy way of saying that they partner together so you can use as many libraries as you need. So check out the library borrowing policies to see how you can get a card there. A library card, barcode, and PIN also gives you remote access to that library's databases - where those journal articles you're looking for live.

OK, so maybe you can get library access by other means. Do you work at or go to another school? Do you have a healthcare provider's license? Many libraries have partner and professional agreements that qualify you for a library card, barcode and PIN. Then you can access those libraries and, perhaps, their databases too.

OHSU if you have healthcare provider's license, you can use OVID databases from home!
NCNM National College of Natural Medicine - Birthingway students can use this library through our partner agreement, but you must go there with your Birthingway ID to get a NCNM card with barcode.
